About image

Won't talking about suicide will give a person suicidal thoughts?

Absolutely not! Decades of data tells us that you don’t give a suicidal person morbid ideas by talking about suicide. The opposite is true. Bringing up the subject of suicide and discussing it openly is one of the most helpful things you can do.

Are depression and self-destructive behavior rare in young people?

Both forms of behavior are actually VERY common in adolescents.

Suicide is the SECOND leading cause of death in youth ages 10-27 nationally and 10-35 in New Hampshire.

People who talk about suicide won't actually do it. Aren't they just looking for attention?

Almost everyone who dies by suicide has given some clue or warning. Do not ignore suicide threats. Statements like, “You’ll be sorry when I’m dead,” or “I can’t see any way out” – no matter how casually or jokingly said – may indicate serious suicidal intent. Even if the person is just seeking attention and has no plans to act, it is always better to address the statements or indications from the person at risk.
If you need help now, please call The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or the Crisis TEXT Line at 741741.
